Principles of Constructing an Effective Drainage System

The following points must be put into consideration and application if an effective drainage layout is to be executed.

i.            Type of soil where drainage is to be constructed.

ii.            Topography or terrain of the community or area.

iii.            Individual residential capacity for constructing the drainage.

iv.            Types of drainage system to be provided in residential buildings, industrial areas, markets, highly commercialized areas, traffic congested areas, slum and marshy areas, waste treatment areas.

v.            Sizes, volume, length and depress of drains to be constructed.

vi.            Water sources and storm or run-off water courses in the area.

vii.            Government policy and finance.
